How to Make Easy Mother's Day Cards

Read all of the steps before starting.
Step 1: Project Preparation

Pre-cut card and paper blanks. Cut a letter-size ( 8½" by 11" or A4) sheet of cardstock into quarters (4¼" by 5½") or use index cards (3" by 5" or 4" by 6"). For the cutouts, cut squares of colored paper that are 1½" to 1¾" in size. You will need 3 to 5 squares for each card. The squares can be a variety of colors and are a great way to use up craft leftovers. For best results, the blanks should have straight sides and square corners. The sizes can vary a bit.

Tip: As an alternative, cut rectangles of colored paper to use as mats on the cards. The mats should be slightly smaller than the cards by ¼" (6 mm) in each dimension.

Tip: Plan ahead. Will the card be presented in an envelope? If so, check the card against the size(s) of envelopes you have. Cut the card down a bit, if needed, to fit inside the envelope. See Aunt Annie's Envelopes to Make project for printable envelope patterns.

Step 2: Cut Out Letters

Cut the letters "M" and "O". For each letter, fold the colored square in half. Trace half of a block letter "M" or "O" along the fold. Cut the letters out, starting from the fold.

Open the letters and smooth them flat. Did you notice? There are actually two letters—the cutout and the cutaway. Both can be used to decorate the cards.

Tip: Show the children how to trace and cut the letters. If they are struggling, draw the cut line on the paper for them, or use a template. Cut out the letters for young children.

Step 3: Glue

Glue the letters to the cards spelling M-O-M. Arrange the letters in various designs, using both the cutout and cutaway letters. You might also cut out hearts and the letters "I" or "U" to spell out more: I ♥ M-O-M or I ♥ U M-O-M.

Step 4: Add a Greeting and Decorate

Add a greeting to the front or the back of the card and any decorative touches you like, using crayons, markers or colored pencils. You can use rubber stamps and paper punches, too, if you have them. Even a small hole punch can be used to express your creativity.

Your card is ready to give to Mom for Mother's Day or any day you want to show your love.

That's it! You're done!
